Why Aren't Aero Minis Worth More?

Question: Why does a 1/400 scale Aeroclassic model made last year in China sell for $50 on EBay and a 1/239 scale AeroMini that is 40 years old with retractable landing gear sell for $30? I get the supply and demand dynamic. How do people get more excited about Aero Mini models so as to drive the demand?

Hello everyone. Being a long time collector with a fairly good sized fleet, I think the answer lies in what was available at the time. AeroMinis were without doubt ahead of their time when they came out. In some respects, such as the retractable landing gear they still are ahead of the pack. However, today, the demand is more for current liveries than past, and the fact that there is so much variety in 1/400 and 1/200 makes these scales more appealing to some. Also, there are many collectors (younger ones) who never saw/heard of AeroMini. I have some 1/400 and 1/200 and a number of others in between, but AeroMini us still my favorite. Part of it perhaps lies in the nostalgia of how long ago I purchased some of these and these planes can take me back there whereas the newer entrants cannot.

I have the same question. Part of it might have to do with most younger collectors wanting current liveries. I built an airport model and it is annoying to have to replace planes every year when airlines change liveries. So I will pay more for planes with new liveries… Also there are probably fewer folks old enough to appreciate the quality of Aero Mini.
